Cambridge Portfolio Project Week 1- #2

Welcome back to my blog! In this blog I will discuss some possible genre choices for my film opening project. Me and my group are in the planning stage of this project. We haven't chosen a genre yet but are deciding between Drama and coming of age.

Drama

Drama is a genre that is very intriguing to me. It can sometimes be overshadowed by others like action, romance, and comedy. Drama is all about the realness of people's emotions and conflicts between themselves and others. It can be very emotionally intense which makes viewers invested in a character's journey. The setting in a drama is very relatable and should seem natural. Dramas are very plot driven and as the story unfolds it builds tension until a resolution.

One of my favorite dramas is from 1957. 12 Angry Men is a legal drama about a jury of twelve men. They are tasked with deliberating the conviction or acquittal of a teenager charged with murder. The defendant is a 19-year Hispanic accused of murdering his father. The movie is filled with endless disagreements, conflicts, and moral questioning. The film forces jurors to confront their own prejudices as they view the accused through racial stereotypes. This film kept audiences on the edge of their seat not knowing what will happen next.

Coming of age

The coming-of-age genre is very special to me, as I can relate to them in my final year of high school. I grew up watching this genre and it is surreal to live my own story. These films consist of the protagonist self-discovery, personal challenges, emotional moments, social expectations, and relatable experiences. Coming of age films are made to make the audience feel like they are a teenager going through the same experiences as the characters. No matter the viewers age they can connect with the personal growth story.

My favorite coming of age film is Perks of Being a Wallflower. The 2012 film follows a 15-year-old freshman named Charlie. He is a quiet outsider who meets two outgoing seniors, Sam and Patrick. They help him navigate high school and discover the joys of friendship, music, and love. This movie not only creates a high school atmosphere but shows what a teenager going through mental health issues looks and acts like. The dark under tones of this movie makes it soul crushing but realistic.

I have a lot to think about for the direction I want to take my film opening. I know with the use of emotion and characters will be critical to my success. In my next blog post I will reveal the genre my team has chosen so; I'll meet you in the future!
