Welcome back to my blog! In this blog I will discuss 3 different film openings from my chosen genre. What is my chosen genre? I hope my last post left you with a bit of a cliffhanger. My genre is........ Coming of age!!! This is one of the genres from my previous post. After discussing with my group, we felt confident we could convey the teen age experience.
The first film opening I will be analyzing is Sixteen Candles (1984) - Opening Credits . This opening is a great example for coming of age films. It starts in the main characters home and quickly establishes the family as extremely hectic. Everyone is running around and not paying attention to the girl. It is her birthday but no one remembers. This says a lot about the family dynamic and displays the common middle child experience of being constantly forgotten. This scene also establishes the plot of the movie and want the character wants out of life like being more mature, finding a boyfriend, and being seen. The best part of this opening is the characters easily being introduced.
The next opening is one of my all time favorites, Dead Poets Society Opening Scene. The very first shot we see is a close up of a candle. This grabs the viewers attention with something intriguing. As the line of boys carry the flags it lets the viewers know the school they are at is built on tradition. This means the school is very structured and that's seen as they are made say the 4 pillars of the school. As the scene progress we see a lot of peoples faces but more importantly we see the main characters. We also see some of their parents and how serious they are. This opening establishes the setting and introducing some of the main characters.
The last opening is Grease (1978) - Opening Credits (High Quality) This opening is animated and has a phenomenal score. Contrary to the rest of the movie which is a regular live action film. At the end of the opening we see the school and it fades from animated to live. This is a very creative way to start the film. It introduces all of the characters in an interesting way. It shows the characters interests and credits them as they are shown on screen. Like most coming of age introducing the characters early is crucial.
I will use my research to help develop my coming of age and establish the main characters. In my next blog post I will discus the credits in opening scenes. I'll meet you in the future!
